The decision to make lever guards mandatory came after several high-profile incidents in MotoGP and other racing circuits where handlebars touched and the brake lever was accidentally pressed during close racing. In 2012, following these incidents, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) mandated brake lever guards in MotoGP to improve rider safety.
